As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 4,750 people, 2,130 households, and 1,145 families residing in the city. The population density was 112.7/km (291.7/mi). There were 2,371 housing units at an average density of 56.2/km (145.6/mi). The racial makeup of the city was 79.92% White, 16.63% African American, 0.17% Native American, 1.89% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.61% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.77% of the population.

There were 2,130 households out of which 29.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.8% were married couples living together, 10.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 46.2% were non-families. 35.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.23 and the average family size was 2.99.
